Law Clerks for the Idaho Appellate Courts

The five justices of the Idaho Supreme Court and the four judges of the Idaho Court of Appeals each employ two law clerks, typically for a one- or two-year term. The appellate judges hire their own clerks. Please see the information provided below for details on applying for a clerkship in each chamber. The salary structure for law clerks is:

Each of Idaho's 45 District Judges also employs a law clerk. If you would like to be considered for one of these law clerk positions, you should contact each District Judge individually. Idaho Supreme Court: Law Clerk

Requirements
Cover letter, resume (including class rank and GPA), transcript, and a writing sample (preferably 10-20 pages). The writing sample should be a legal writing sample, such as a brief, memorandum in support of a motion, etc., that demonstrates the applicant’s skills in legal writing, research, and analysis. The sample should be the applicant’s own work, with no more than minimal editing by others. Applications for August 2027 law clerk positions will be accepted from December 10, 2025 through May 1, 2026.

Applications may be sent through the mail, emailed to npappas@idcourts.net, or hand-delivered to the clerk’s office. Letters of recommendation may be sent separately. Externships: Applications for extern positions (unpaid) will be accepted at any time.
